As the 2004 OECS Squash Championships came
to a close on May 30th, history was made as 13-time consecutive champion
Charlie Sonson was crushed by a fit James Bentick. The two rivals had met many
times before with Sonson edging away each time (Bentick's only win came in a
team tie in 2002), but this time, James was ready for revenge. After a
gruelling first game, Bentick maintained the pressure to trounce the perrenial
champ 9/7, 9/1, 9/0. St. Vincent claimed another title, when Colin Alexander
cruised past Dominica's Patrick Martin in the Men's Over 40 final, winning 9/5,
9/3, 9/7. St. Lucia prevented a clean sweep of the main titles, as Lindy
Alexander overcame Sherian Slater in the Women's Open final, prevailing
9/5, 2/9, 9/5, 9/2. A team is now being selected to compete in the Southern
Caribbean Squash Championships 2004, scheduled for August 15-22 in Guyana.
