GUYANA’S Boys and Girls teams opened the Western
Union/Supligen Caribbean Junior Squash team championships at Georgetown Club
with victories over the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and
Bermuda respectively, yesterday. Jamaica and Bermuda, also, registered wins in
the Boys team, and Trinidad & Tobago (T&T) and Barbados in the Girls team.
The Boys team was fixed to continue last night, with Guyana taking on Jamaica,
the Bahamas meeting the OECS, and Barbados clashing with Bermuda.
This morning, the Girls team will continue at 9:00 hours. Guyana will come up
against Jamaica, Barbados take on the OECS and Bermuda face T&T, while in the
afternoon in the Boys team, Guyana clash with the Bahamas, Jamaica come up
against the OECS and Barbados battle with T&T. The final session tonight will
involve the Girls team with Guyana facing T&T, Jamaica meet the OECS and
Barbados take on Bermuda.
Guyana’s boys were in top form with a 5-0 win over OECS, finishing their matches
in three games, with only Raphael De Groot clinching victory in five. In the
Under-19 (1) match, Gerard Greaves conceded one point, in disposing of Dominique
Rivers, 9-0, 9-0, 9-1, Under-19 second player Ryan Farnum gave away just three
points in the final game, beating Jason Lang, 9-0, 9-0, 9-3.
Damien Da Silva put away Shane Slater, 9-1, 9-3, 9-1, in the Under-17 match,
while Kristian Jeffrey beat Marlon James, 9-1, 9-3, 9-0, in the Under-15
encounter. De Groot eventually defeated Diarra Venner, 9-1, 6-9, 8-10, 9-6, 9-5,
in the Under-13 encounter.
Guyana’s girls beat Bermuda, 4-1. Under-19 first player, Andrea King won Jessica
Mitchell, 9-2, 9-6, 9-1, but a player was not available to face Guyana’s number
two Tiffany Solomon who won by default.
In the Under-17 match, Kristina King beat Katy Lennox, 9-0, 9-1, 9-3, but
Dominique Dias went down to Laura Robinson in the Under-15 match, 2-9, 8-10,
1-9. There was no player to meet Daina King in the Under-13 match and she won by
default.
The Jamaican boys were also in devastating form, beating the Bahamas, 5-0. Brad
Low conceded one point in disposing of Chad Rolle, 9-0, 9-0, 9-1, Michael
Anderson beat Delano Ferguson, 9-1, 9-1, 9-1, in the Under-19 matches.David
Patterson devastated Scott Jupp, 9-0, 9-0, 9-0, in the Under-17 match, while
Chris Binnie defeated Cliff Bodie, 9-4, 9-1, 9-6 in the Under-15 match, and
Adrian Hugh took care of Glenardo Smith, 9-7, 9-4, 9-1.
Bermuda boys beat T&T, 3-2, with James Stout dropping only one point to dispose
of Allister Van Sertima, 9-1, 9-0, 9-0, in the Under-19 first match-up, while in
the other, Andrew Robinson defeated Andrea Richards, 9-0, 9-1, 9-0. Michael
Shrubb put away Adrian Dyer, 9-1, 9-0, 9-2, in the Under-17 match.
But T&T recorded wins in the Under-15 and Under-13 matches, Josh Pinard beating
Robert Maycock, 9-7, 9-2, 9-6, and Justin Sanguinette taking care of Robert
Forbes, 9-7, 6-9, and the remaining games by default. Barbados girls disposed of
Jamaica, 5-0, with Under-19 players Sherice Mac Donald and Maia Blackman getting
wins without taking the court because opponents were not available.
Naida Mc Carthy was taken to five games by Tracy Binnie, 7-9, 9-5, 6-9, 9-4,
9-1, in the Under-17 match, while Bo Harris put away Kristine Bell, 9-7, 9-1,
9-6, and Cheri-Ann Parris defeated Haley Foreman, 9-1, 9-0, 9-5, in the
Under-13. T&T girls beat OECS, 5-0, as Jamie Galt conceded one point in the
first Under-19 match against Nicole De Gale, 9-1, 9-0, 9-0, while Nakita Poon
Kong defeated Christianne Andrew-Rose, 9-5, 9-2, 9-1 in the second. In the
Under-17 match, Joanna Scoon beat Christa Bonnett, 9-1, 9-4, 9-1, while Tessa
Martin was taken to five games by Amber Glasgow, 8-10, 2-9, 9-1, 9-6, 9-6, in
the Under-15 match and Amy Gillezeau put away Sherina Slater, 9-4, 9-4, 9-1, in
the Under-13.
