Steve Cubbins reports ...
[1] Rachael Grinham (Aus) bt [2] Omneya Abdel Kawy (Egy) 7/9, 9/1, 9/2, 9/4 (38m)
The match started at a quick pace, with Grinham racing into a 3/0 lead
courtesy of a couple of winning drop shots and two errors from Abdel Kawy -
a portent of what was to come.
The
rallies lengthened, but the top seed continued to hold the advantage, moving
to 5/2 before Omneya found her way into the game. And she found a good route
too, moving Grinham to all corners to force a series of errors. The Egyptian
pulled back from 2/5 to 8/5 in a single hand, and although Grinham closed
with a pair of delightful cross-court drops it was too late - a lob
out of court gave the game to Omneya.
Probably encouraged by the success of her shotmaking Omneya continued to
play her shots in the second game. But now they were finding the tin with
alarming regularity. From 3/1 to Grinham five consecutive errors took the
game away from Omneya, and a final weak return was dropped by Grinham as the
Egyptian was leaving the court, declining to follow up her shot.
The third was a carbon copy of the second. The rallies were longer but the
outcome the same - a couple of winners from Grinham, but mainly tins from
Omneya, and an identical final point as the Australian took the lead.
The final game was all Grinham too, but now she was winning the points
rather than relying on her opponent's errors. It was close at the start, but
when Omneya served out at 3-all it was the signal for Rachael to move into
top gear. Drops, counter-drops, volley winners .... there was nothing Omneya
could do as Grinham closed in on the title. |
FIONA GEAVES ADVANCES IN JAMAICA
|
|
RESULTS:
Women's Hedonism II Squash Open, Negril, Jamaica
Quarter-finals:
[1] Rachael Grinham
(AUS) bt [7] Latasha Khan (USA)9-2, 9-3, 9-6 (36m)
[4] Annelize Naude
(NED) bt [8] Dominique Lloyd-Walter (ENG) 7-9, 9-3, 9-1, 9-7 (55m)
[5] Fiona Geaves (ENG)
bt [3] Madeline Perry (IRL) 9-2, 9-4, 5-9, 9-6 (57m)
[2] Omneya Abdel Kawy (EGY)
bt [6] Pamela Nimmo (SCO) 9-7, 9-0, 9-1 (22m)
England's experienced
Fiona Geaves caused a notable upset in the quarter-finals of the
Women's Hedonism II Squash Open when she upset Ireland's third
seed Madeline Perry in a four-game marathon in the new WISPA
World Tour event in Negril, Jamaica.
The 37-year-old from
Gloucester recently moved to New York to take up a coaching position at
the Heights Casino, and was making her return to the WISPA Tour in
Jamaica after a five-month layoff.
The fifth seed, clearly
refreshed by her break, took the opening two games against the Irish
champion for the loss of just six points. Perry fought back to take
the third game, but Geaves stuck to the task and, despite the
interruption caused by a power cut, wrapped up her morale-boosting
victory 9-2 9-4 5-9 9-6.
"I know I'm renowned
for my short game, but tonight it was just great," Geaves told the
official website
www.squashsite.co.uk/jamaica. "Everything I was trying was
coming off, especially the backhand drop, so I just had to keep on
trying them, and it was very frustrating for Madeline.
"I made a few unforced
errors in the third, so I decided I had to be a bit more patient. The
break could have been an advantage to either of us, but I was getting a
little tired, so it probably helped me there."
Geaves will meet second
seed Omneya Abdel Kawy in the semi-finals after the 20-year-old
world No9 from Cairo despatched Scotland's sixth seed Pamela Nimmo
9-7 9-0 9-1 in just 22 minutes.
The others semi-final
will feature Australia's top seed Rachael Grinham and fourth
seed Annelize Naude. Grinham, the world No1, beat USA's No7
seed Latasha Khan 9-2 9-3 9-6 while Naude, from the Netherlands,
defeated England's eighth seed Dominique Lloyd-Walter 7-9 9-3
9-1 9-7.

Teran Tests Kawy In
Jamaica
Unseeded Mexican
Samantha Teran gave second seed Omneya Abdel Kawy a stern
test in the opening round of the Women's Hedonism II Squash Open
in Negril before the Egyptian ultimately survived the 53-minute

world No9 from Cairo, beat the 24-year-old from Mexico City 9-6 10-8
10-9 and now faces sixth seed Pamela Nimmo. The Scot ended
local interest in the event with a 9-4 9-0 9-3 defeat of Jamaica's

Jamaica on show for WISPA Girls |

Karen Anderson |
|
The 2005 Hedonism II Open will also introduce the players to some of our
countries most scenic attractions. While squash will be the emphasis,
Jamaica will also be on show.
Wildcard for Anderson
The wildcard entry into the main draw has been granted to Jamaica's
Karen Anderson, the 34-year-old former national champion who these
days concentrates on coaching, but is still ranked number three in the
Caribbean.
Karen has won the National title at junior and senior level, and has
represented Jamaica at the Caribbean Championships, and the Pan-Am and
Commonwealth Games.
She took up coaching part-time in 2002, and went full-time in 2003 but
still finds time to enter competitions, finishing 3rd in the 2004 Barbados
Open, winning the event the next year, and finishing runner-up in this
year's St Lucia Open.
Qualifiers for West
Jamaica's other entrant in the draw is Marlene West,
the current all-Jamaica champion, who will compete in the qualifying
competition.
Multi-talented Marlene represented Jamaica in the 2002 Commonwealth Games,
was Caribbean Champion 1993-95 and 1999-2004, has representative honours
in swimming, water polo and football, and holds coaching
