WINNIPEG – Alana Miller of Winnipeg completed a
strong run at the $11,000 Meadowood Pharmacy Open women’s professional squash
tournament on Saturday and also showed she has talents as an event organizer
as well.
In Saturday’s semifinal, Miller fell to second
seed Emma Beddoes of England 11-6, 3-11, 11-8, 11-6. Beddoes will face
top-seed Latasha Khan of the U.S., in the championship final on Sunday. Khan
defeated Lisa Camilleri of Australia in the other semi 11-5, 6-11, 11-9, 11-8.
The event is a stop on the 2009-10 Canadian
Squash Circuit and a tournament on the Women’s International Squash Players
Association circuit.
Miller, Canada’s top-ranked international
player at number-42 in the world and seeded fourth here, is still regaining
her form after suffering a calf injury this past spring. She spent most of the
summer in rehabilitation.
“It was a pretty close match and I had my
opportunities,” said Miller, a three-time Canadian champion. “I guess I played
O.K. I just haven’t been back playing long enough to keep the momentum going.
But overall I was pleased with how I did.”
Beddoes started strong but Miller responded
with some impeccable volley drops to take the second game handily and kept the
pace partway through the third before losing some steam.
